Red Ribbon Week is one of America's oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaigns. The 2019 National Red Ribbon Week theme is: Send a Message. Stay Drug Free. ™
"The theme is a call to action to speak out in support of healthy choices. The theme is also a reminder that by staying drug free, you are sending a message to yourself and others about how much you value yourself, your overall health, your community and your future."
I have was lucky enough to partner with the ambitious and passionate North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) for the second year in the row. We had a select handful of students who took the initiative to tackle this project. The students consisted of girls who attended the 2019 Young Women's Conference along with other student leaders. Together, they planned a week of advocacy and education efforts around substance-use prevention from October 21st through October 25th.
The students used peer-to-peer techniques to educate their fellow student body. The students quizzed their peers on ATOD related questions for a chance to win a prize during their lunch periods. They also created informational signs that displayed facts about drugs including, e-joints, vapes, purple drank, alcohol, and opioids. These signs were posted throughout the school's bathroom stalls. Finally, they concluded their efforts by having an informational table at the NBTHS football game where they were able to not only impact their peers, but the North Brunswick Township community at large along with individuals form local counties.
