GlenisRedmond2atCMS3-14-19
by Pathways Clinicians Jeanne Neuwirth, LCSW and Lisa Lussier, LSW Carteret Middle School students were recently treated to an extraordinary after school program hosted by Pathways School Based Youth Services Program, in concert with State Theater New Jersey’s Artist-in-Residence Program. Poet Glenis Redmond fascinated a classroom filled with girls and boys with her “informance,” in which she shared several poems from her three published books, Under the Sun, Backbone, and What My Hand Say. Ms. Redmond’s informance involves not simply reading her poems, but illustrating a complete picture using voice inflection and performance in a manner that is entirely captivating. By Jeanne Neuwirth, LCSW, Pathways Clinician An auditorium buzzing with teenagers quieted to an attentive audience as Kristen Harootunian shared her journey through a painful childhood to now being in a mentally positive place as a young adult. Kristen works with Minding Your Mind, an organization whose mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues. She was invited to Carteret High School as a guest of the school’s Pathways School Based Youth Services Program. Kristen shared that her struggles grew out of her mother’s years of alcoholism and devastating loss to suicide. While students may or may not have been touched by those particular struggles, most people have experienced times when they “felt alone, felt scared...one thing we all have in common is feelings, and you may identify with those feelings,” she said. Throughout her teenage years, she struggled with anxiety and depression, which worsened because she did...

collage-teen-dating-violence
By Karolyn Estevez, Youth Development Specialist - Pathways February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. SADD conducted a tabling event during the lunch periods to target the majority of the high school students and help bring awareness to the issue. SADD students educated peers on the facts about dating violence, as well as traits of healthy relationships through quiz questions for which the students won a Hershey kiss. Throughout the month SADD students conducted a flower sale event, the profits of which were donated to an organization that serves women who have been victims of...
