A ceremony to recognize The Raymond J. Lesniak ESH Recovery High School was held Monday, November 7th at the school located on the Kean University campus in Union.
The “Tree of Hope” is awarded annually to an organization that promotes recovery from addiction.
“The Recovery High School was chosen as the 2016 Tree of Hope recipient because of their impact on the community they serve, every day.” said Wellspring’s Executive Director Ezra Helfand. “The High School is a trailblazer in the State of New Jersey, offering a comprehensive high school curriculum developed to accomplish the following goals: support sustained recovery, through a healthy school environment and holistic recovery supports; provide a quality education, addressing the varied learning styles of each student and improving all students’ academic skills so they can maximize their post-high school options; and, offering career and academic counseling for those who are college bound and for those who will enter the workforce after graduation”.
Several dignitaries spoke at the event including: Senator Lesniak; Union County Vocational-Technical Schools Superintendent of Schools Peter A. Capodice; and Pamela Capaci, CEO at Prevention Links.
Wellsprings’ annual Tree of Hope campaign is designed to raise the consciousness of our neighbors to the fact that addiction is an illness fromwhich many do recover, and to celebrate those recoveries. This annual event is one of the agency’s primary fundraising vehicles and supports their confidential information and referral Helpline, which helps over 800 individuals and families annual to begin their journey of recovery.
About the Raymond J. Lesniak Recovery High School
The Raymond J. Lesniak Experience Strength and Hope Recovery High School (E.S.H.) opened in September of 2014 as part of the award winning Union County Vocational Technical School District and is the first public recovery high school in the state of New Jersey. E.S.H.’s mission is to create an environment where education and recovery go hand in hand. Through the tireless efforts and dedication of many individuals and entities, that mission is coming to fruition. Prevention Links, a community based drug prevention agency located in Union County, has been the driving force behind the creation of the recovery high school. Together with Senator Raymond J Lesniak, their advocacy, programming, and fundraising efforts made the program possible. Prevention Links mission is to foster healthy, sustainable communities by empowering people through education, collaboration, and linkage to resources. E.S.H. is a natural outgrowth of this mission.
