This summer, the Pathways Summer Academy welcomed students from Carteret High School for a program designed to inspire, educate, and connect. Over several weeks, participants engaged in a blend of college and career exploration, creative expression, skill-building activities, and community experiences, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Running from July 8 through July 31, the academy brought together 30 high school students in grades 9–12 for a packed month of learning and growth. Over the course of the program, students participated in 12 workshops, daily team-building exercises, four enrichment trips, two yoga sessions, and even a community painting social. Each activity was designed to help students build confidence, strengthen connections, and explore new possibilities for their future.
Building Skills Beyond the Classroom
The program was intentionally designed to help students develop both academic and personal skills that will benefit them long after the summer ends. Activities ranged from team-building games and yoga sessions to creative arts projects and college campus visits. Each experience provided opportunities to build confidence, improve communication skills, and strengthen social connections.

Whether students were painting tote bags, creating collage journals, or participating in group challenges, they learned to express themselves, collaborate with others, and embrace new ideas. By putting away their phones and engaging face-to-face, participants rediscovered the value of human connection in a digital-first world.

Creativity as a Tool for Growth
A major highlight of the summer was the focus on creative expression. Hands-on art projects encouraged students to explore their identities, share personal stories, and process emotions in healthy ways. From personalized tote bag designs to identity-based collage journals, these activities helped foster self-confidence, emotional regulation, and a sense of belonging.
The emphasis wasn’t on creating a “perfect” product. Rather, it was on the process, the self-discovery, and the conversations sparked along the way. Art became a bridge between students, allowing them to connect over shared experiences and unique perspectives.
Experiences That Broaden Horizons
The Summer Academy extended learning beyond the walls of the program with a variety of enrichment trips. Students toured Kean University to get a feel for college life, visited the Zimmerli Museum and New Brunswick Performing Arts Center to experience the arts, and explored interactive STEM exhibits at the Liberty Science Center.

These outings provided fresh perspectives and helped students envision possibilities for their futures. For many, it was their first time participating in activities like these, making the experiences all the more meaningful.
Supporting Younger Learners
In addition to the main academy, Pathways partnered with The Path, a program designed for elementary students in summer school. Through bilingual activities, art, movement, and social-emotional learning, younger participants strengthened their communication skills, built confidence, and prepared for the upcoming school year in a supportive and structured setting.
A Lasting Impact
By the end of the summer, students left with more than just fun memories; they left with greater confidence, stronger relationships, and a clearer vision of their goals. The Pathways Summer Academy demonstrated the powerful impact of providing safe spaces where young people can learn, grow, and imagine brighter futures.
As the program looks ahead to next year, the mission remains the same: to give every student the opportunity to explore their potential and discover what’s possible when community, creativity, and connection come together.
