There’s also a sneak peek behind the scenes of our SADD club members giving feedback to producers and actors as the PSA is put together.

Congratulations to Sabih Hasan for his award-winning idea, and congrats to his team: Jasmin Langomas, Kevin Hernandez, and Tanya Bopari! We are so proud of how these students represented Pathways, SADD Club, and Carteret High School!

Original article: In the minds of many teenagers, a driver’s license equates to freedom, fun, and more time spent with friends. While getting a license can be all of those things and more, there are dangers that young drivers need to be educated about and fully prepared for before they hit the road.

Organizations like SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and The NRSF (The National Road Safety Foundation) provide important opportunities for students to learn more about road safety. This year, these organizations teamed up to co-sponsor a nationwide Public Service Announcement Challenge, #DrivingSkills101—Respect The Roundabout.

SADD has worked with schools for more than 40 years to help educate students about substance abuse, road safety, and personal health. The NRSF has provided educators, students, youth advocacy groups, and more, with free driving safety resources for over 60 years.

The #DrivingSkills101—Respect The Roundabout PSA Challenge asked that students create a 2-minute or less video explaining their unique ideas for navigating a roundabout. Contestants were asked to focus on this topic because roundabouts can be intimidating for new drivers, but can also be safer than making left- or right-hand turns in intersections.

#DrivingSkills101—Respect The Roundabout PSA Challenge Winners

This year, the winner of the video contest is a student at Carteret High School in Carteret, New Jersey. In 2006, Wellspring Center for Prevention partnered with Carteret High School to create Pathways School Based Youth Services Program (SBYSP), a comprehensive prevention and mental health treatment program. Pathways aims to provide mental health and academic support to Carteret High School students, allowing students to focus on learning in the classroom. The program also provides ways for students to become more involved in their community, through clubs, recreational activities, and events.

We are proud that Sabih Hasan, a student from Carteret High School, has been chosen as the winner of the 2021 #DrivingSkills101—Respect The Roundabout PSA Challenge and will receive the $2,750 prize for the Carteret SADD chapter. Contestants were asked to respond creatively to the challenge and Hasan’s mock-horror movie format made his submission a winner. In addition to the prize money, he will also have the opportunity to work with an Emmy Award-winning production team to produce his Public Service Announcement, which will be shown virtually at SADD’s National Conference this summer and air on “Teen Kid News”!

Other SADD chapter finalists will receive $250. These winners are:

  • Cape Coral High School, Cape Coral, FL
  • Chaparral High School, Temecula, CA
  • CIVA Charter High School, Colorado Springs, CO
  • Delta Middle School, Delta, UT
  • Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI
  • Shoreham Wading River High School, Shoreham, NY
