Being a teenager in today’s world can be tough — constantly being surrounded by new social media trends, worrying about the future, and facing pressures at home, school, and amongst peers can certainly take a toll on one’s mental health. Although there is not a singular solution to fix these stressors, there are multiple self-care tools young adults can use to cope and take care of themselves. Some of these may include:

  1. Mindful meditation: Meditation is scientifically proven to change our brain structure and function in a positive way. It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, and promotes relaxation. You can meditate silently or find a guided meditation online, which is great for beginners!
  1. Exercise: The great thing about exercise is that you can do whatever feels best for you. You can go to the gym, join a workout class, or go running/walking outside. Exercising outside allows you to be surrounded by nature while improving your physical and mental health at the same time.
  1. Sleep: Getting enough sleep is overlooked, especially among teens. When someone is sleep deprived, it is harmful to their thinking, and their physical and emotional state. Getting 8-9 hours of sleep every night will improve your mental health, boost your mood, and allow you to function at your best.
  1. Express Yourself: Having a creative outlet to convey your thoughts and feelings can be very therapeutic. The point is to channel whatever emotions you are experiencing into some type of art form, whatever that looks like for you. Perfection is not the key here! Some examples include painting, drawing, writing poetry/music, dancing, journaling, or photography.
  1. Spend time with friends and family: Surrounding yourself with loved ones can release chemicals in the brain that promote overall well-being. Opening up to others can relieve stress and make a big difference in your life!

It is important to remember that self-care is preventative care and mental fitness — not a cure. However, once you make it a priority in your life, you will notice the positive impact it leaves on your physical and mental health. Remember to do what feels right for you and can be easily implemented into your daily routine.
