DUNELLEN, NJ — September 1, 2026 — Wellspring Center for Prevention joined community members, local leaders, and partner organizations on August 31 for the 10th Annual Overdose Awareness Ceremony at Washington Memorial Park in Dunellen.
Held in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the annual ceremony honors lives lost to overdose, supports individuals and families affected by substance misuse, and raises awareness about prevention, recovery, and the importance of reducing stigma.
This year’s event included remarks from local leaders and individuals impacted by overdose, a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of those who have died, and resource tables connecting attendees with community services. Wellspring Center for Prevention participated as a resource partner alongside the Middlesex County Health Department and the RWJBarnabas Peer Recovery Team.
The ceremony also marked a decade of overdose awareness efforts led by the Borough of Dunellen and Stop Underage Drinking Students in memory of Tyler Katarsky, a beloved member of the community. Over the years, the observance has focused on increasing understanding of the overdose epidemic, reducing stigma, and educating the public about substance misuse prevention.
The New Jersey Senate and General Assembly recognized the occasion through a Joint Legislative Resolution sponsored by Senator Jon Bramnick and Assemblymen Vincent Kearney and Andrew Macurdy, commending the Borough of Dunellen and Stop Underage Drinking Students for their longstanding commitment to overdose awareness.
