Addiction News & Policy Updates: Week of May 25, 2025

Staying ahead of emerging trends is critical to effective prevention. This week’s addiction news highlights growing concerns over the misuse of weight-loss medications, evolving patterns in the drug supply, and the continued need for comprehensive federal investment in the opioid crisis. These developments serve as a reminder that while progress is possible, prevention efforts must adapt to an increasingly complex landscape.

Poison Control Calls Surge for Weight-Loss Drugs in PA and NJ

Pennsylvania and New Jersey poison control centers are reporting a sharp increase in exposure calls linked to popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications such as Wegovy and Zepbound. In New Jersey alone, cases rose from just 29 in 2021 to 189 in 2024. Health officials say the spike is driven by increased usage, accidental overdoses, and the growing availability of counterfeit or compounded versions of these drugs. Experts are calling for stronger public education campaigns to promote safe usage and awareness of risks. (Source: WHYY)

Progress on Opioid Deaths Requires Sustained Federal Investment

Following a historic 27% drop in overdose deaths nationwide, experts caution that life-saving tools like naloxone, while essential, are not enough on their own. Public health advocates are urging Congress to make long-term investments in comprehensive prevention and treatment strategies that address the root causes of addiction. (Source: The Hill)

Drug Supply Trends Complicate Overdose Responses

Although overdose deaths have declined overall, the U.S. drug supply remains more dangerous than ever. According to Psychology Today, potent drug combinations, including fentanyl mixed with methamphetamine in the West and fentanyl-cocaine mixtures in the East, are increasingly common. These trends are especially concerning among young adults and are made worse by the presence of sedatives like xylazine and medetomidine, which naloxone cannot reverse. Experts warn that more sophisticated overdose response strategies are urgently needed. (Source: Psychology Today)

From counterfeit medications to shifting overdose patterns, this week’s headlines underscore the importance of vigilance, education, and advocacy. Whether you’re a parent, professional, or policymaker, staying informed is the first step toward building safer, healthier communities.
