Dads Bounce into their Children’s Lives

big-group-shot
Written by Lauren Balkan, LCSW There is a great deal of research that supports that children who have an involved father or a supportive involved father figure, are more likely to be emotionally secure, have better academic outcomes and more positive social connections. Pathways has been running fatherhood events for the past several years to give fathers and father figures support in getting more involved in their child’s life. We offer fun, interactive bonding experiences that allow father/father figures to have some focused time alone with their child or children. The activities have been offered to youth in the district starting in third grade and going through high school. On March 29th, Pathways took 70 Carteret residents to the Bounce Factory in Warren, NJ. The youth who attended the trip were in third through sixth grade and were accompanied by their father or father figure. Children and adults participated in...

DEA Collects Record Number of Unused Pills as Part of Its 14th Prescription Drug Take Back Day

31967065
Americans nationwide did their part to reduce the opioid crisis by bringing the DEA and its more than 4,200 local and tribal law enforcement partners a record-setting 912,305 pounds—456 tons—of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for disposal at more than 5,300 collection sites. That is almost six tons more than was collected at last spring’s event. This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the fall of 2010 to 9,015,668 pounds, or 4,508 tons. Now in its 8th year, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events continue to remove ever-higher amounts of opioids and other medicines from the nation’s homes, where they could be stolen and abused by family members and visitors, including children and teens. The DEA action comes just days after President Donald J. Trump announced the mobilization of his entire Administration to address drug addiction and opioid abuse by directing the...

3rd Annual Pathways Fatherhood Bowling Event Brings Joy to Participants

outside-group
Written by Lisa Lussier, LSW, MSW On Saturday October 7th, Pathways held their third annual Fatherhood Bowling event, at the Woodbridge Bowling Center on Main Street in Woodbridge. The event created a fun and interactive platform for middle and high school students and their fathers or a significant male in the child’s life to spend the afternoon together. This wonderful event was made possible through a grant from the New Jersey Office of Faith Based Initiatives, as a way to celebrate the important role a father or significant male figure can play in a child’s life. Almost one hundred participants attended the event, including community members from the United States Army, the Carteret Police Department, Carteret Middle School and even the father of a Pathways employee. The entire bowling center was reserved for this event. Participants were treated to bowling, professional family pictures, food and fun. To help the good times...

iStock-514300679
The Harmony FSC will be hosting a workshop this Thursday (7/13) titled, "The Art of Co-Parenting" at 5:00 pm. We have Kareem Lovelace, from the Youth Advocate Program's Fatherhood Healthy Relationships Initiative, who will be joining us to facilitate the session. We are inviting dads of all ages and stages to join us in this interactive session, as we explore some of the difficulties and challenges of co-parenting. We know it is an issue among both parents, but we are looking to create a safe space for males and gentlemen to connect and find positive solutions. The workshop will be from 5:00-7:00 pm, including refreshments and childcare for the gentlemen who attend. It will also be offered in both English and Spanish to accommodate attendees.

Monster Mini Golf with Dads

Monster Mini Golf with Dads
An active, involved, positive father role has numerous effects on all aspects of a young person’s life. Many feel that the role that fathers play in their children’s life has been downplayed and marginalized, adding to the fatherless crisis we now face. The State of NJ, Department of Children and Families has made fatherhood a priority issue. In addition to the many other programs and educational efforts, school based youth services programs across the state have made efforts to educate communities about the importance of father involvement, as well as to engage fathers in positive activities with their children. On Saturday April 8th The Pathways Program sponsored a mini golf event for children in 3-5th grades and their fathers or father figures. This is Pathways’ second event this year that focused on supporting and celebrating the important role that fathers have in their children’s life. This event was made possible...

Father Involvement

Father Involvement
"He didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it."   Clarence Budington Kelland Studies have shown that involvement of a father or a positive male role model in the lives of children has profound effects on them. Father-child interaction promotes a child’s physical well being, perceptual ability and competency for relating with others. These children also demonstrate greater ability to take initiative and evidence self-control. Over the course of time, we have learned more about the essential roles of both mothers and fathers in the healthy development of their children. Contemporary studies consistently show that children with involved, loving fathers are much more likely to do well in school; have healthy self-esteem; exhibit empathy and pro-social behavior; and avoid high-risk behaviors such as drug use, truancy, and delinquent activity, than children who have uninvolved fathers (Horn & Sylvester, 2002, p. 15) . Father involvement...

Pathways Holds Successful Fatherhood Event

Pathways Holds Successful Fatherhood Event
Pathways School Based Youth Services program at Carteret High School is invested in the Fathers Matter campaign and has received a grant from the Office of Faith Based Initiatives to bolster the father focused programming. There is a growing body of research and data which demonstrates that a father’s presence in a young persons’ life has a great impact. The research concludes that children with fathers present have fewer behavioral problems, do better in school and are better off economically. This information is so vitally important because of the swiftly ascending numbers of fatherless families in this country. Within a decade, two parent household dropped by 1.2 million. The result, according to the US Census, is that 1 in 3 children live in father-absent homes. An active, involved, and positive father role has numerous effects on all aspects of a young person’s life. Many feel that the role fathers play...
