The Pathways Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club attended the 15th annual GSA Forum in Middletown on Saturday, November 17th.
The forum was sponsored by the Bayard Rustin Center that aims to create a space for LGBTQ activism and education. Over 500 participants from various high school and middle schools state wide attended the forum to join together to further advance support, recognition and strengthening of the young LGBTQ community.
Students were given the opportunity to attend three workshop that address the needs of students along with school staff members, parents and allies.
The forum welcomed key note speaker Gavin Grimm, an LGBTQ youth activist. Through sharing his own experience, Grimm inspired the audience to stand up for themselves, have a voice and advocate for the rights of transgender students.
One senior GSA member, Max Lopez shared feeling touched by Grimm’s coming out story and felt “at home” at the GSA Forum. Students were able to visit individual tables set up by various organizations that provided necessary resources and information about the LGBTQ community. Overall students of the GSA described the forum as educational and inspiring as well as sparking motivation to increase membership and activities within the Carteret GSA and school.
