Description: This course will follow how we have gone from epidemic to epidemic, starting with Cocaine leading to our current opiate epidemic. We will examine the rise of cocaine use in its various forms which gave way to the Opiate epidemic which has now morphed into a Fentanyl epidemic. At the end of this course, the student will, 1. Understand the history of opioid use, 2. Identify the types and effects of opioid substances, 3. Recognize how the opiate epidemic has seen heroin make a comeback, how Oxycontin has gone hand and hand with that and has now morphed into a Fentanyl epidemic, 4. We will examine the principles of Harm Reduction, and 5. Become familiar with the use of Opioid Replacement Therapies.

This course has been approved for six (6) renewal credits.
