The first-ever Pathways Freshman Transition Program was definitely a hit!

The program consisted of 32 incoming CHS freshman and 10 mentors. Our mentors were chosen based on their attitude, positive behavior, and willingness to help others. These mentors will assist the freshman as needed during the school year and create a sense of encouragement.

IMG 6114All campers participated team building activities including human knot, Coke and Pepsi, and hit the deck. They also enjoyed playing sports together during the week.

On Tuesday, all campers went to the NJ State Theatre to see the movie Wonder. Students were able to learn the effects of bullying and understand the importance of kind gestures towards others.

Everyone participated in a communication workshop led by Jelysa Hernandez to highlight how unclear communication can lead to confusing interpretations, emphasize the need for clarity when communicating, and understand the various types of communication.IMG 6131

Students created vision boards with Jeanne Neuwirth to visualize their goals, dreams, and aspirations.

Campers also attended a social media workshop with Jen Kurdyla to understand the negative effects of social media and its role within society.

IMG 6108Everyone created mindfulness jars and were taught the importance of becoming calm before reacting to situations. Students were shown a video clip of how others use jars to “just breathe” and use their words.

Afterwards, all campers attended a mindfulness workshop with Kara from Springfield Holistic Wellness using essential oils, raisins and cheerios and a body scan. All participants were given mindful coloring books afterwards!

Lauren Balkan presented an informative time management/organization skills workshop to teach students how to study and prepare for the demands of high school.

Camp ended on Wednesday with a successful panel discussion on transitioning to high school, the importance of planning as well as setting goals with our Pathways Summer Counselors: Gideon, David, Navjit and Samaria.

On Thursday, campers received a tour of CHS and heard from administration about high school expectations and keys to success.

Afterwards, all campers created individualized bracelets as part of a commencement activity. Every camper had to choose a word that either motivates or inspires them. They all learned the importance of positive affirmations and self-talk.

The Pathways Freshman Transition Program was funded by State of New Jersey, Department of Law and Public Safety, Juvenile Justice Commission and the Middlesex Board of Chosen Freeholders Support Grants, administered through the County’s Office of Human Services
