A Strategy to Assess the Consequences of Marijuana Legalization

A Strategy to Assess the Consequences of Marijuana LegalizationIn January 2016, the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. (IBH) released a report calling for a sustained and systematic annual collection, analysis and reporting of data related to the public health, safety and other consequences of marijuana use and marijuana legalization.Over the last year IBH has explored opportunities for national leadership on this vital initiative. As a result of that exploration, IBH has revised its Strategy calling on US Congress to designate the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) to establish an independent Scientific Committee to Monitor the Effects of Marijuana Policy Changes. As described in the revision of "A Strategy to Assess the Consequences of Marijuana Legalization", there is ample precedence for Congress to take on this role. The charge of the Scientific Committee would include:To assemble, synthesize and interpret available data and research pertaining to the effects of marijuana use and the effects of changes in marijuana policy in the United States; To recommend improvements in data collection by public and private agencies and organizations; To recommend priorities in research on the effects of marijuana use and the effects of changes in marijuana policy, directed to federal and states agencies, foundations and other entities that fund research; and,To issue annual reports setting forth findings regarding the effects of marijuana use and the effects of changes in marijuana policy. To read the full report, please click here.
