Motivating the Helping Professional Self-Care, Burnout and Compassion Fatigue
The literature on burnout has spanned nearly 40 years and the concept of self-care is certainly not new to our profession. Although we are warned about falling prey to burnout and compassion fatigue from the onset of our studies, how often do we really stop and take inventory of how our work impacts our personal life and well-being? We are living in a critical time, with increasing environmental and social pressures that affect the professional just as much as the consumer.
Self -care is not only the way to respond to our occupational stressors, but it is an essential component to our competent and effective ongoing professional practice. In this course, participants will explore the physiological, psychological and social-relational impact of working in the helping profession. Effective strategies for identifying burnout, and compassion fatigue will also be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to define their personal health and wellness goals with a focus on career longevity.
