SADD Students Educate Their Peers on Teen Dating Violence


By Karolyn Estevez, Youth Development Specialist - Pathways February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. About 1.5 million teens nationwide experience dating violence from a dating partner in a single year. Pathways’ SADD club took charge of teen dating violence awareness month and spread education to their peers about the signs of teen dating violence and what to do if they or a friend were ever in a dating violence situation. SADD conducted a tabling event during the lunch periods to target the majority of the high school students and help bring awareness to the issue. SADD students educated peers on the facts about dating violence, as well as traits of healthy relationships through quiz questions for which the students won a Hershey kiss. Know! The Effect of Peer Presence


Article provided by Prevention Action Alliance We all know the heavy influence peer pressure can have on a tween/teen, especially when it comes to risk-taking behaviors like drinking, smoking and using other drugs. But are you aware of the impact the mere presence of peers can have on an adolescent’s decision-making, without any coercing or encouragement at all? Psychologists from Temple University were curious to know why it is that otherwise good kids seem to make poor decisions when they are among their peers. In seeking an answer to this question, they used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans on teens, college students and adults to determine if there are differences in brain activity when making decisions alone versus with their friends.
