Day of Silence: The Voices You Are Not Hearing

Silence
By Anna Pepe On April 28th, Pathways Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) at Carteret High School participated in GLSEN’s Day of Silence. Over ninety students participated by taking a vow of silence to show their support for the LGBT community and to raise awareness of the silencing effects of harassment and bullying of LGBT youth. The number of participants doubled from 2016, with students reporting that “silence was visible this year”. All participants wore a yellow badge for the day where they noted their reason for participation. Student reasons included support for peers, ending injustices towards the LGBT community, standing up for those who don’t have a voice to defend themselves, and acknowledging that love is love. Students “broke the silence” at Pathways after school where they touched on the challenges and excitement around the event. Day of Silence

Day of Silence
On April 15th Pathways GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) participated in the National Day of Silence . Forty five Carteret High School students participated in the Day of Silence to show their support for the LGBT community and those voices that have been silenced by others for so long.  Any student participating wore a badge with a yellow card inside that described the meaning behind the day of silence and on the back the student identified their personal reason for participating.  Students remained silent all day and were supported by their peers and the teaching staff. At least one teacher began each class with a journal assignment related to the Day of Silence. Students who participated stated that they felt empowered by the event and are already planning for next year to make the event bigger and more powerful. Addiction News & Policy Update for Week Ending February 22, 2019
By Anna Pepe October 21, 2015 was Unity Day which focuses on bringing schools and communities together to unite against bullying and join together for acceptance and inclusion. According to findings from the GLSEN 2013 National School Climate Survey most LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students have been victimized in school and have heard anti-LGBT remarks on a regular basis. This all ties in with PATHWAYS newest  club, the Gender & Sexuality Alliance, commonly referred to as the GSA. The GSA is focused on providing a safe space for students to discuss gender and sexuality issues and work to end homophobia and transphobia. GSA students band together to host a Unity Day event for the students of Carteret High School. A very talented sophomore created a beautiful  canvas and painted rainbow which was then surrounded by Ally Pledges in the shape of clouds. Over 300 students signed pledges agreeing to...
