Pathways/Wellspring Sponsor Assemblies to Raise Awareness of Prescription Drug Abuse and the Dangers of E-Cigs
Working in concert with the Carteret High School SAC, Veronica Pitts, Pathways SADD Club sponsored 5 assemblies to educate students and parents about prescription drug abuse and e-cigarettes. Linda Surks of Wellspring Center for Prevention, spoke movingly of the dangers of prescription drug abuse. She told the story of her son, Jason Surks, a caring, loving young man with a great sense of humor.  Jason was studying pharmacy at Rutgers University when he began abusing prescription drugs that he ordered from a pharmacy in Mexico. Unfortunately, once the numbers of new smokers decreased, so did the funds allocated to tobacco prevention. With the growing popularity of e-cigarettes and vaporizers, we are now seeing for the first time in years the number of kids using tobacco products including e-cigs on the rise again. The new perception is that e-cigs are not harmful at all. The 2nd graders who get the...
