April is Alcohol Awareness Month!

alcohol-awareness
Written by Caroline Capriccio, Wellspring intern Founded and sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (now Facing Addiction with NCADD), Alcohol Awareness Month provides a focused opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of alcohol addiction, its causes, effective treatment, and recovery. Established in 1987, Alcohol Awareness Month was developed to reduce the stigma associated with addiction. The goal is to encourage communities to reach out to the public and share information about alcoholism and recovery. The 2019 theme, “Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow,” is designed to draw attention to the pervasive impact that alcohol has on young people, their friends, families, and communities. This message highlights the reality that help is available and recovery is possible. The month of April will be filled with local, state, and national events aimed at educating people about prevention and treatment of alcohol addiction. These events provide youth and their families...

Celebrating 38 Years of History and Community Impact

Reception-area--squared
As you read this, our agency is turning 38 years old. And if I may so say, we look marvelous! Here’s a little historical perspective. We were incorporated in February, 1980 as the Middlesex Council on Alcoholism to provide an information/referral helpline and introduced Mr. Chugs, an alcohol prevention program for elementary school. Housed at Middlesex General Hospital (now Robert Wood Johnson Hospital,) our Middlesex county branch began operations without funds, but with a dedicated group of volunteers. The activities of the agency time included training; events in school settings; seminars at Perth Amboy General, Middlesex General, and South Amboy Memorial Hospitals; programs for numerous community groups; in-service training for various county agencies; co-sponsorship of the first statewide conference on Alcohol Problems and the Criminal Justice System; and a countywide seminar on alcoholism for the clergy. Services continued until funding became scarce and in 1977, the Council was forced to close...

April 2017 Marks 31st Alcohol Awareness Month

April 2017 Marks 31st Alcohol Awareness Month
Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) and affiliates like Wellspring Center for Prevention have celebrated Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. With this year’s theme, “ Connecting the Dots: Opportunities for Recovery ,” the month of April will be filled with local, state, and national events aimed at educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism, particularly among our youth, and the important role that parents can play in giving kids a better understanding of the impact that alcohol can have on their lives. Alcohol and drug use by young people is extremely dangerous and is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviors, even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction. Adolescence is a time...
